WebQuest: Online Game for English Learning

A webquest designed for the college students to enlarge their knowledge about education.

INTRODUCTION

There are so many ways to learn or acquire English language, but in my opinion, the best way to acquire English language is by playing games, especially online games. The word “Online” refers to something global, which means the game is played by many people in different countries. By playing online games, we can interact with people in other country, we can talk to them. The game itself uses English language for every word in there. From that, we can learn some vocabularies which we don’t know before. By doing that kind of activity, we automatically learn English. In fact, there are so many people who play online games know more about English language instead of people who don’t play online game.

In this WebQuest, students will be introduced about what online game is, what it is for, it's advantages and disadvantages. Students will be asked to answer and discuss about those that are related to online game.

TASK

In this stage, you have to do the following instructions:

2. You have to give some explanation about online game and its relation in the English learning.

3. After that, choose and one specific online game. Then, make a review of your chosen game.

4. Now, to make you are well-informed about the game. You need to play the game, and to make sure you’ve played the game, put some pictures you’re playing the game (by showing your character for example). To make it clear, you can see and read this text. The following link is for example.

5. Based on the game review, make a presentation in powerpoint slide or any other media for making a presentation.

6. Write a conclusion about what you’ve learned

PROCESS

In this stage you also have to follow the following instructions:

First, you need to make a group consist of 3 (three) members. After you make your group, now you can discuss with your group members about online game. Using your own online game review, try to choose which one is the best, and find the similar information of each game, including its benefits and its bad effect. After you discuss, now you are well-informed about online game and its relation for English learning.

On the following week, It's time to present what you've discuss in the group, and present in front of the class by using the presentation you've made. After the presentation ends, other groups will ask several information about your presentation. Try to answer as creative as you can.

WebQuest: Online Game for Learning English (example)

Now, let me give the detail information about online game I’ve played and its benefits.

First, I would like to introduce my game. This is “Digimon Master Online”. I played this game since I was in Senior High School grade 2, but now I stop playing because of some reasons. This is online game and I like it very much. Firstly I don’t like playing online games, but after I know this game, I became interested and keep playing for about 2 years.

Before you play this game, you must create your own ID by signing up in www.joymax.com/dmo/. After you sign up and create your own ID and Password, open DMO (Digimon Master Online) and login using your ID. For example my char ID: suryawh1t3kn1ght, Password: *************) ^o^

This following picture is just how I played by using my character.
(Level 94 tamer (character) and level 90 Gallantmon Crimson Mode (the red-colored digimon)) hehe.

Actually I’m not going to show you the game explanation, but its benefits for learning English.

The benefits of playing “Digimon Master Online” are:

1. Get more vocabularies.

This game uses English language, means that every word is in English. The way is finding the difficult words you’ve never heard, and find the meaning in the dictionary. It will be helpful for you to get more vocabularies. The following picture is the part of the game which shows some difficult words.

2. Make sentences correctly about grammatical structure.

Almost every sentence, every text has correct grammatical structure. It is because the Game Master (the creator of the game) uses English as his native language. By seeing the content of the game, you can imitate the sentence, learn by that sentence, find the structure, and you’ll be able to make the correct sentences based on its grammatical structure. The following picture is a part of the game.

Those two are the benefits for learning English. There are also some other benefits:

1. For entertaining.

2. To get more friends.

3. To get some money.

Those all are the explanation about how online games especially “Digimon Master Online” makes the player more informed and fluent in English. Honestly, this game was the only effective way that I use to learn English. I used to play more than 8 hours in a day. Every time my father told me to stop, I just said, “I’m not playing, father. I’m studying… you can see right here… bla..bla..bla..” :D
